A thrilling championship game put an exclamation point on another exciting year for the world's top pro indoor lacrosse league. A see-saw battle between eastern finalist Toronto and western champion host Washington kept a crowd of almost 9000 people on its feet the entire game. Toronto scored six goals in a row to erase an early 3-0 Washington lead, and held a 10-6 lead late in the third period. However, in a sequence of events that sums up the explosiveness of this amazing sport, Washington scored two goals in the final fifteen seconds of the period. That re-energized the home crowd and fueled an 8-0 run for the home team. Washington never looked back, running away with the title in a rousing 15-11 win--bringing the first-ever title to one of the league's long-suffering franchises!

The Washington championship run was not the only league's only story, but it was one of the biggest. The team had just relocated to Washington state after several years in the San Francisco area. Fan support was tepid at first, but the strong showing on the floor (11-5) engaged the fan base and established the franchise on solid footing.

Aside from Washington's championship run, western division-mate Edmonton (10-6) also enjoyed a "Cinderella" season, finishing with the club's first-ever winning record and playoff berth. Calgary (10-6) also made the playoffs, thanks to their characteristic stiff defense. Minnesota and Colorado brought up the rear of the division. With a 5-11 record, Minnesota made the playoffs by default--and quickly exited. Colorado (4-12) went with youth movement for 2010, traded away popular veterans, and then got hit with injury bug, losing multiple key players. Amazingly, the team with league's second best attendance finished 0-8 at home (but 4-4 on the road!).

Out east, last year's New York franchise moved to Orlando, with much the same result in their new location--they continued to win games and lose money. Sparked by an MVP performance from their star forward, Orlando won nine of their first fourteen to clinch the division early and coast into the playoffs. Toronto experienced an up and down season, finishing on the "up" side with strong goal-tending, a pair of playoff wins and a berth in the league championship game after upsetting Orlando on the road, 15-10. The scramble for the rest of the east division playoff positions went down to final week, with Boston, Buffalo, Rochester all contending. Boston traveled to Buffalo for the regular-season finale, with huge playoff implications. With a sell-out crowd of over 18,000 cheering them on, Buffalo registered a 13-10 win to leave both clubs at 8-8 for the season. Rochester then simplified the math by losing in Washington to finish 7-9 and out of the playoffs. Philadelphia (5-11) rounded out the division, never really a factor in the playoff race after stumbling out the gate 1-6.
