Turn "The Juice" Loose! The 1973 Pro Football Season for SECOND SEASON Pro Football Game, NOW AVAILABLE!

Welcome back to football of the 1970s, with the new 1973 Pro Football Season for SECOND SEASON Pro Football Game, now available! We’re very excited about this release--it’s our first “vintage” pro season in almost 10 years! And WHAT a season it was...

The centerpiece of the 1973 season was, of course, “The Juice,” and his odyssey to achieve 2000 yards rushing. With a record-setting 250 yard effort on opening day, the effusive runner from Buffalo was on-task right from the start, capturing the imagination of an entire nation of football fans in his quest for 2000 yards. Will O. J. do it again for YOU, on YOUR tabletop? With SECOND SEASON’s uber-realistic depiction of pro football, he’ll have the same chance for you as he did in real-life--but whether he DOES it, or NOT, you’ll ENJOY every yard of it!

However, there was much more to the 1973 season than the new league rushing record. If ever there was a truly pivotal year for professional football, it was the 1973 season. In many ways, 1973 marked the final season of the “modern” age of pro football, and ushered in the dawn of the “milennial age” the following year. The 1974 season would introduce sweeping changes to the game, changes which laid the groundwork for football as we know it today--specialized, computerized, and pass-happy. But in 1973, those changes hadn’t yet even been seriously considered. As a result, you’ll experience a different brand of football, with an emphasis on run plays and field goal kicking.

An interesting sidebar to the ‘73 season was the number of established, veteran quarterbacks calling signals for new teams. San Diego’s balding, paunchy (but dangerous) passer announced his displeasure with his team’s run-oriented philosophy, and found himself traded to Los Angeles--where he threw even LESS, but won MORE, in a spectacular season. The lanky passer he replaced in Los Angeles resurfaced in Philadelphia, and similarly prospered operating one of 1973’s few pass-oriented offenses. Minnesota’s long-time back-up passer migrated south and became a starter, and a winner, in Atlanta. But no quarterback stood out more in his new surroundings than the legendary "Johnny U." The aging star took his crew cut and high top shoes to San Diego, trading his horseshoe logos for lightning bolts, with mostly disappointing results.

A superb class of rookies entered the league in 1973. Fifteen of the leeague’s 26 first-round draft choices earned at least one all-star berth during their career, and two of them are in the Hall of Fame. A host of major stars of the '70s and '80 made immediate, significant impacts in the league as rookies in 1973.

Finally, 1973 featured an exceptionally strong field of playoff teams, and some notable near-misses. Three teams each won 12 games--Miami, Los Angeles and Minnesota. Four more won 10 games--Pittsburgh. Cincinnati, Dallas and Washington. Oakland rounded out the playoff contenders with a 9-4-1 mark, pursued all season by division rivals Denver and Kansas City in a dogged chase that went down to the season’s final week. Buffalo and Atlanta each finished 9-5, yet failed to reach the playoffs. For Denver and Atlanta, it was their first-ever winning seasons. (Perhaps YOU can provide the extra coaching genius needed to get one of these “close-but-no-cigar” clubs in the post-season! That’s part of the FUN of SECOND SEASON!)

The 1973 playoffs produced a major surprise in Dallas’ upset of Los Angeles in the divisional round. Ultimately, Minnesota and Miami squared off in the Big Game. For Miami, it marked its third straight appearance playing for the league title. Minnesota had rebounded from a disappointing 7-7 season in ‘72 and was seeking to avenge an upset title loss to Kansas City four years earlier. Miami scored a pair of early touchdowns, and cruised to a convincing 24-7 victory.
