1963-64 Pro Hockey Season

Montreal and Chicago battled it out for first place, with the race decided by a single point. However, BOTH were knocked out in the playoff round, and Detroit and Toronto squared off for the championship! The first three games of the championship series were each decided by a single goal, one in overtime. Detroit took a three games to two lead into game six, which again went into overtime. In that game, one of Toronto's stout defencemen broke his ankle stopping a late, hard shot--but returned to the game in overtime, broken ankle and all, and scored the game-winning goal! Does it get any better than that!? With that kind of momentum, Toronto then cruised to an easy win in game seven to clinch what was one of the most exciting championship series in hockey history.

1972-73 World Hockey Association

At PLAAY.com, we've always been a fan of alternate leagues, so it's with GREAT excitement that we release the 1972-73 World Hockey Association card set for HOCKEY BLAST Pro Hockey Game! The WHA was part of a spate of alternate pro sports leagues that appeared in the 1970s, and it made a lasting impact on pro hockey. Four of the league's clubs were absorbed into the established pro hockey league and still compete today (although three of them have relocated to different cities.)

Although the WHA managed to sign a few established pro hockey stars, most of the rosters that first year were filled with journeymen players and nondescript rookies. Stiil, the competitive balance made for a very exciting season of pro hockey, with lots of scoring and plenty of unpredictability! Philadelphia's star center came over from the established league and posted huge numbers, leading the league in scoring with 50 goals and 74 assists. The divisional races were just as exciting: in the western division for example, the regular season ended in a dead heat between Minnesota and Alberta for the final playoff spot. None of the tie-breakers could break the deadlock, and the league finally decided on a one-game playoff at a neutral site!

The playoffs unfolded rather uneventfully, with the favored teams handily winning each series. New England faced Winnipeg for the league championship, and coasted to a four-games-to-one series win. New England's win in game five--a 9-6 goal-fest--typified the WHA's exciting, high-scoring brand of hockey.
